Getting Back in the Game for 2018
The new cycling season brings fresh opportunities — new routes to explore, fitness goals to achieve, perhaps new professional cycling responsibilities. But before you head out for that first big ride of the year, let's talk about what really matters: getting home safely.
Safety as a Foundation
In my experience, the cyclists who avoid serious incidents aren't necessarily the most talented or the fastest. They're the ones who have internalized safety as a practice — not an afterthought. Safety isn't a checklist you complete before a ride; it's a mindset you maintain throughout every ride.
Equipment Check: The Non-Negotiables
Before every ride, run through these checks:
- Helmet: Fit is critical. The helmet should sit level on your head, not tilted back. The straps should form a "V" under your ears, and you should be able to fit no more than two fingers between the strap and your chin.
- Tires: Check for proper inflation (check the sidewall for the recommended PSI) and inspect for cuts or wear.
- Brakes: Test both front and rear brakes before every ride. You should be able to lock either wheel with moderate pressure.
- Lights: Even during the day, front and rear lights dramatically improve visibility. If your commute takes you through any period of low light, lights are essential.
Skills Refresh
"I don't care how many years you've been riding — a skills refresher is always valuable. The fundamentals are called fundamentals because they form the foundation of everything else."
If it's been a while since you've had formal cycling instruction, consider a refresher course. Even riders with decades of experience often have gaps in their knowledge — particularly around traffic law, emergency maneuvers, and group riding etiquette.
Goal Setting for 2018
What are your cycling goals for the year? Commuting more? Joining a group ride? Preparing for a professional cycling role? Whatever your goals, build safety into them as a foundational element — not an add-on.
